Description
Mussorgsky / Prokofiev’s Pictures at an Exhibition / Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Op. 25 “Classical Symphony”: Carlo Maria Giulini, Chicago Symphony Orchestra: Reissued as Part of the Original Source Series on 180g LP. Pure Analogue Mix & Cut from the Original Four-Track Tapes at Emil Berliner Studios. Pressed at Optimal.
An exhibition honoring his friend, the painter Victor Hartmann, inspired Mussorgsky to create his piano cycle in 1874. A kind of “first-person narrator” wanders through a gallery, observing ten paintings. Ravel arranged the cycle for orchestra in 1922. Giulini’s performance is widely considered a benchmark recording.
Prokofiev wrote his Symphony No. 1 during World War I. It is unique in both sound and form: playing only fifteen minutes, it is classical in style, bursting with vitality, and a delightful homage to the music of the Viennese Classical period.
The Original Source Series features 4-track recordings from the ’70s remastered by Emil Berliner Studios using 100% analogue techniques to create the highest possible audio quality. Produced on 180g vinyl by Optimal and housed in deluxe gatefold editions, featuring additional photos and/or recording documentation.
